Hornbeam – Symbol of Courage, Europe's Hardest Wood & Perfect Hedge Plant

The hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) is a tree full of contradictions: botanically, it belongs to the birch family, yet its wood is legendary for its hardness – in Celtic mythology, it is considered a symbol of stubbornness and steadfastness. In 2007, it was named Tree of the Year in Austria.

It can live up to 150 years and grow 25 meters tall, is resistant to diseases and pests, and has been the first choice for hedges for centuries – as it sprouts excellently and grows densely. When free-standing, it forms a magnificent, expansive crown.
