Larch – the coniferous rebel that sheds its needles

The larch (Larix decidua) is unique: as one of the few conifers, it sheds its needles in winter – and sprouts anew in spring with delicate, light-green needles that are even edible (tart-sour, with a slight lemon note). In autumn, it glows golden before retreating again.

It grows in open spaces, tolerates extreme temperatures, and can live up to 800 years. Its wood is the hardest among conifers – traditionally used for bow making. Larch balm has antiseptic properties and has been used medicinally since antiquity.
