Mahaleb Cherry – fragrant wild cherry, bird magnet & wood for elegant pipe bowls

The mahaleb cherry (Prunus mahaleb), also known as St. Lucie cherry, is one of the most charming native wild cherries: In spring, it is covered with a sea of white, intensely fragrant blossoms – a valuable bee pasture and an eye-catcher in the garden. Its small, black fruits are a coveted food source for birds.

The wood of the mahaleb cherry is particularly hard and aromatic – it was traditionally used for making pipe bowls and fine turned pieces. The tree grows in dry, sunny locations and is exceptionally drought-resistant and easy to care for.
