Judas Tree Planting Set (Cercis siliquastrum) by Meinwoody

The Judas tree is an ecological hit for any garden: its orchid-like blossoms grow directly from the trunk and branches – in brilliant pink, even before the first leaf appears. Early in the year, when other trees are still dormant, it offers abundant food to insects and small animals. And its flowers are even edible. With this set, you can plant it yourself: Open, press in seeds, water. Done.

What's inside

  • 5–10 Judas tree seeds (Cercis siliquastrum)
  • Plastic-free plant pot made from hemp fiber composite – 100% compostable
  • Approx. 150 ml Terra Preta soil
  • Dimensions: 6 × 6 × 5 cm (L × W × H)
  • Grass paper cardboard with planting instructions

Interesting facts about the Judas tree

The Judas tree (Cercis siliquastrum) supposedly gets its name from its heart-shaped leaves, which are said to resemble Judas's silver coins. What is certain is that it is an asset to any garden.

  • Cauliflorous – flowers grow directly from trunk & branches (very rare!)
  • Bloom: early spring, vibrant pink-purple, orchid-like
  • Flowers edible raw – sweet-sour, ideal as a salad garnish
  • Flower buds can be pickled as a spice (like capers)
  • Slow growth, broad umbrella-shaped crown – ideal as a solitary tree
  • Hard wood with beautiful grain – valued as veneer wood
  • Ecological early starter: food for bees & insects when others are still dormant

How it works

Press seeds into the soil, water – and let them grow. After cultivation, you can plant the seedling directly with the compostable pot into the ground or a larger container. The pot decomposes without residue in 12–24 months. Your plant roots freely and undisturbed.

Germinating Tree Seeds

1. Place about 5 tree seeds in the freezer for 24 hours, then in lukewarm water for 24 hours to soften. Please note: do not apply this step for Moringa. Moringa cannot tolerate frost.

2. Place WOODY on a saucer. Press the softened seeds 1-2 cm deep into the soil. Then water until the soil is nicely moist.

3. Place WOODY in a bright spot. Keep the soil moist until the seeds germinate. Germination can take about four to twelve weeks.

4. Plant your tree when it is more than twice as tall as the pot is wide. Place the tree, including the compostable pot, into the soil.

Further planting and care tips can be found here.

* A saucer is not included in the delivery.
