Alder – Venice's Foundation, Tree of Legends & Master of Wetlands
No other tree copes as well with moisture as the alder (Alnus glutinosa): Already in the Stone Age, it was the preferred wood for pile dwellings – and the famous port city of Venice still rests largely on alder wood to this day. Underwater, it becomes rock-hard and lasts for centuries.
