Alder – Venice's Foundation, Tree of Legends & Master of Wetlands

No other tree copes as well with moisture as the alder (Alnus glutinosa): Already in the Stone Age, it was the preferred wood for pile dwellings – and the famous port city of Venice still rests largely on alder wood to this day. Underwater, it becomes rock-hard and lasts for centuries.

The alder lives to be 100 to 120 years old, grows 30 to 40 meters high, and thrives even on nutrient-poor, moist soils where other trees fail. In old folk legends, demons lurked in alder-covered moors – a sign of how deeply this tree is rooted in European mythology.
